Faust- IV

Faust, particularly the mighty "IV", took the electronic experimentation of their krautrock peers like Cluster and Kraftwerk and added a certain WTF!! that made them a major influence on some of avant-garde rocks least compromising acts like Swell Maps, Pere Ubu, Dead C and Sonic Youth, bands that would influence many others in turn. A true musical Landmark

Titan- A raining Sun of Light & Love for You....

An albums worth of blistering heavy space psych. A sac ripping riff fest of epic proportion. Makes me forget why I'm not supposed to lounge around on soft pillows, smoking opium 24-7.

Year of No Light- Nord

Year of No Light are a post-metal band from where else? France. These guys definitely wear their influences on their sleeves, as it were. When you first listen to it you'll be convinced it's Isis (albeit with some Neurosis and a touch of converge thrown in. a couple nods to Jesu perhaps) In this case, that is definitely a good thing. This album full of incredible builds, super heavy dirge riffs, and impassioned vocal workouts blended flawlessly with neurosis like ambience, and soaring guitar melodies. And all of it done at such a high level of skill that "Nord" Clearly stands toe-to-toe with the best work it's predecessors have done. A new album is long overdue

Seminal release from kranky records. It's easy to see why bands like Godspeed You Black Emperor and Deerhunter/Atlas Sound were so keen on having the label release their records.

Trashcan Sinatras- Cake

The most criminally overlooked album in the history of british guitar pop. Trashcan Sinatras weave intricate tapestries of infectious guitar pop, it's the type of album you can listen to for years and still find new things. Wether your mood be one of celebration or reflection, you'll find this album more than up to the task. You'll be hard pressed to find something as sweet yet filling as "Cake" (yes, I went there!) Not to be missed!!!

Oranssi Pazazu- Muukalainen Puhuu

The problem end of year lists is there are so many albums released during any given year that one can only give a very small percentage of them a fair listen. I just found this slice of finnish prog black metal that came out last year, and it is a piece of unmatched goodness, totally epic blackened space prog. I mean what else would you expect from a black metal album with an astronaut on the cover and a band logo shaped like a bird?! 2009 album of the year!!!

tracklist

1. Korppi

Black Mayonnaise- Ttssattsr

Do you like good music?

If your answer to the previous question is no, then I have a rare treat for you. This saucer of pure audio diarrea would sound something like a cross between Godflesh, Sunn0))) and Hawkwind, if those bands consisted entirely of autistic eight-year olds on heroin. Home recorded Lo-fi retard space-sludge with cave man vocals possibly recorded in an actual cave. I would kill to see this guy land a spot on "american-idol". Afterthought: The lyrical content is probably "ttssattr!" not "aargghh!"

Codeine- Frigid Stars

Alongside bands like Low, Bedhead, and American Analog Set, The Aptly named Codeine were part of the "slowcore" scene of the mid 90's. Codeine play extremely slow tempo guitar rock, try to imagine doom metal without the metal and replace the doom with reflective resignation and you have codeine. Perfect mood music for staying in on a rainy day such as this.
