Striborg- Autumnal Melancholy

Aptly dubbed "The Black-Metal Jandek", Striborg has spent much of the last decade self-recording his own albums from his seclusion deep in the Tasmanian forests. The songs alternate between burzumic atmospheric pieces, and worded fair typically consisting of home recorded drums and guitar and his signature high pitched croak. AmateurishIy recorded with a seemingly early Mountain Goats inspired buzz covering everything. Imangine Gollum singing misanthropic dirges from deep under his mountain, disturbing stuff indeed. Extremely fucked-up brilliance.

Oranssi Pazazu- Muukalainen Puhuu

The problem end of year lists is there are so many albums released during any given year that one can only give a very small percentage of them a fair listen. I just found this slice of finnish prog black metal that came out last year, and it is a piece of unmatched goodness, totally epic blackened space prog. I mean what else would you expect from a black metal album with an astronaut on the cover and a band logo shaped like a bird?! 2009 album of the year!!!

Weakling- Dead as Dreams

San Francisco metal legends Weakling released one album, "Dead as Dreams", never toured, and broke up. Reportedly two years in the making, "Dead as Dreams" melds black metal, post rock, ambience, and noise into seamless song suites that are epic masterpieces. One of the best metal albums of all time.
